When it comes to experiencing strong emotions as a listener, which albums, performances, and artists come to mind?
Albums that come to mind are:
Kevin Ayers – Bananamour: This is my most played record at the moment. I love how every song on it is a different mood and it's all quite sexy and uplifting. I find that it also suits me to be eclectic.
On our sophomore record Experience, I feel like every song is its own world.
Neil Young - Decade: This album got me into Neil Young at the tender age of 17.
Whenever I put it on it takes me away to a safe, calm, creatively open space filled with opportunity and inspiration.
Nina Simone - To love somebody: This covers album is so beautiful it should be a weapon used to promote love and peace. I’ve been cooking a lot to this recently. It's just a heavenly experience.
Hearing Nina’s renditions of these songs by Dylan, Leonard Cohen, The Byrds and the Beegees is pure magic and straight away takes me to a wonderful place. In my heart and in my head.
Zulu – Zulu: I am obsessed with the opening track of this album, “Candela,” and it's made me want to write in Spanish. It's so cool and free.
My next record will have some Spanish in it.
Wednesday – Bleeds: Had this on repeat since it came out - I love her phrasing and lyrics.
Also the mix of country and grunge ignites a calm and joy in me I can’t put into words.
When it comes to performances, I guess Nirvana Unplugged in New York is a big one - I love the unedited youtube video that is out now on there.
From a young age this record taught me that the spirit of punk could create timeless songs. It also introduced me to the Meat Puppets and ‘that’ David Bowie song. I tend to reference this song a bunch.
We have an incredible viola player ‘Freya Hicks’. She also arranges our strings.
We just released a short EP titled Always the Girls Unplugged. Inspired by a tour we did as a duo. We documented this enegery at Shuta Shinoda’s (spiritualized / hot chip/Ghost poet) Hackney studio with minimal over dubs.
Artists - When I'm in a certain disassociated mood and on my own. The heavy music I grew up listening to always comes in handy to calm me and bring me back into my body.
I tend to put on Iron Monkey’s self titled 1996 album. Slipknot's hits also move me like I imagine classical music does to a lot of people too.
On that note J.S Bach - Goldberg Variations is my morning routine listen when I need to zone into the day!
When we where recording Experience, our drummer and old friend Mr Danowski played me this record and to this day it irons me out most mornings.
