Part 2
Could you describe your creative process on the basis of one of your pieces, live performances or albums that's particularly dear to you, please?
I am especially passionate about our next EP Shadows of the Night, which will be released on 11.08.2023. This EP is a very emotional journey and development, and there were great and exciting moments during the production process.
It started relatively simple with one edit, which quickly turned into 4 or 5 different versions. But none of these mixes appealed to me. So I wanted to delete everything from the project on a Sunday. However, I had already created an 8-minute drum setting and decided to delete only the sound tracks. Then, on a Sunday, I started to completely rework the piece harmonically.
In the end, I had the original mix and the instrumental and sent these two versions to Mario Navajo. Mario was immediately enthusiastic about the basic structure and sent me back some initial ideas by mobile phone that evening. At that time I didn't know that Mario can sing quite well from earlier hip hop sessions. Since the implementation and possibilities for vocal recordings in my studio were limited, I asked a good friend if he could help us. He invited us to Limtree Studios where Mario recorded the vocals in a professional studio.
Together we are looking forward to the upcoming release and hope that the music community likes it as much as we do. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mario, Sören, Tom and Julian again for their support and assistance.
Do you conduct “experiments” or make use of scientific insights when you're making music?
The search for new sounds and sound generators is a continuous process for me. I like to experiment with different synthesizers and spend a lot of time tweaking sound settings. This is all about discovering new and exciting sounds that can enrich my music.
While I rely on my experience and gut feeling, my ears play a crucial role in shaping the sound. They are my most important tool to capture and evaluate the subtleties of sounds. My hearing helps me to perceive subtle nuances, identify unwanted frequencies and ensure that the sound texture and balance are harmonious.
Ultimately, music is an art form where there are no strict rules. Therefore, it is important to trust your intuition and let personal preferences and creative impulses guide you. By experimenting and trying out different sounds and instruments, I can integrate new and unique elements into my music and further develop my own style.
How does the way you make music reflect the way you live your life? Can we learn lessons about life by understanding music on a deeper level?
For me, music is a constant companion in my life, whether in sports, in my free time at the lake or in the car. It is always present and accompanies me in every moment. I especially like to combine music with sports activities, as it motivates me and increases my energy. I love to immerse myself in exciting DJ sets by artists I like and feel intensely involved with.
My music preferences tend to be more restrained sounds with a certain depth. At the same time, it's important to me that the music pushes me forward and propels me, even if it's usually rather quiet and relaxed.
I find that my musical preference also reflects my way of life. I value calm and serenity, yet the drive to always strive forward. This combination of relaxation and progress shapes my personality and my way of enjoying life.
Do you feel as though writing or performing a piece of music is inherently different from something like making a great cup of coffee? What do you express through music that you couldn't or wouldn't in more 'mundane' tasks?
For both processes, the preparation of a coffee and the composing of music, a certain experience and high-quality ingredients or approaches and tools are required. It is important to know your own tools and the available possibilities and to use them creatively. Through music you can fully develop and express yourself.
I believe that it is important to put your heart and soul into every task in order to achieve a good result in the end. That's why it's also indispensable when making music. If I want to cook something delicious, I also need good ingredients, a great recipe and a certain amount of love. Transferring this to music makes the most sense to me.
Every time I listen to "Albedo 0.39" by Vangelis, I choke up. But the lyrics are made up of nothing but numbers and values. Do you, too, have a song or piece of music that affects you in a way that you can't explain?
The meaning and impact of music is actually very personal and emotional. In my case, the song "Precious" by Depeche Mode is particularly meaningful because it was played by a close friend at the funeral of a mutual friend. This moment left a strong impression on me.
It was an emotional challenge to hear the track played live at the band's last concert in Frankfurt on 01.07.2023.
Music has the unique ability to evoke memories and stir emotions. It can comfort us and help us express and process our feelings. In the case of "Precious", the song is closely related to the loss of a loved one, and every time I hear it, it brings back all the emotions and memories of that special moment.
The power of music is that it speaks to us on an emotional level and accompanies us in certain moments. It can comfort us, encourage us and inspire us. It is a universal language that connects people across cultural and linguistic boundaries.
If you could make a wish for the future – what are developments in music you would like to see and hear?
The importance of music as a unifying element and its ability to bring people together is undeniable. It has the power to break down barriers and create a common language. When I think about how this affects my hometown, a creative space for artists and creatives would fit in very well. Such a space would promote exchange, spending time together and creating a safe place to be creative.
While there are certainly cultural offerings and creative opportunities in the region surrounding the city of Fulda in Hesse, Germany, creating a dedicated space for artists and creatives would further enhance the potential. Such a space could serve as a meeting place where artists can share their ideas and experiences, get inspired, and possibly even initiate joint projects.
In addition, such a creative space would strengthen the local art scene and promote cultural diversity in the region. It could also help discover and nurture the creative potential of young talent by offering workshops, training or exhibitions.
All in all, the creation of a creative space for artists and artists in my hometown and its surroundings would be a great enrichment.
